The View from the Couch: ‘Men in Black: International’

“About the Movie” from the Official Men in Black: International Website:

“The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe.  In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.”

The View from MY Couch:

Let’s start with the positive. Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, The Big Sick) voices Pawny, and he is the best part of the movie. Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Fat Thor) and Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok, Creed, Sorry to Bother You) have rather good chemistry as Agents H and M. Liam Neeson (Taken, Take 2, Taken 3) and Emma Thompson (Late Night, Beauty and the Beast) give performances that you would expect based on their career history. Most of the aliens are creative and look good.

Now, the negative. This movie was not very good. It starts very slow, and then the rest is just pretty boring. There is one decent fight scene, and one kind of okay chase scene. From the first scene of the movie, you know exactly how the movie is going to climax. Then, after the characters hold you by the hand and walk you to the big “twist”, the big climax/fight scene fall way short, in both time and excitement.

Every funny part of the movie is in the trailer (except everything that Nanjiani says made me laugh, as I write this I realize that I might just think he has a funny sounding voice). Speaking of the trailer, I saw it probably 25 times in the last month. The movie seems like an extended trailer. A two-hour-long trailer for a good Men in Black movie.

This movie has 5 bonified movie stars. Hemsworth, Thompson, Nanjiani, Neeson, and Thompson. The movie overall is pretty disappointing, but the stars are reason enough to see the movie.  I would not recommend spending the money to see it in the BigD, IMAX, or any sort of large format screen. It isn’t a typical summer blockbuster, but it is enjoyable enough for a weekend movie night.
